Maya Angelou Early Life and Parents

On April 4, 1928, Maya was born in America. Her father’s name is Bailey Johnson and her mother’s name is Vivian. Her father was a doorman and retired from navy and her mother was a nurse and card dealer. Marguerite’s older brother gave her the moniker “Maya,” which is short for “My” or “Mya Sister.” When their parents’ “calamitous marriage” broke down when Angelou was three and her brother was four, their father left the two children alone by train to live with their paternal grandmother, Annie Henderson, in Stamps, Arkansas. Because the general store she owned sold necessities and because “she made wise and honest investments,” Angelou’s grandmother’s financial success during the Great Depression and World War II was “an astonishing exception” to the difficult economic conditions facing African Americans at the time.
