GARDEN CITY, Idaho (CBS2) — Several days of triple-digit temperatures await the Treasure Valley, and the Boise Hawks are working to ensure their players and fans beat the heat.
Already one game into a six-game homestand, the Hawks play at Memorial Stadium nightly through Saturday (7:05 p.m.), before a matinee game at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
The forecast for those games isn't too kind on those in attendance.
Temperature Highs
- Wednesday: 100F
- Thursday: 102F
- Friday: 104F
- Saturday: 104F
- Sunday: 105F
Little natural shade will be offered either, with each day being sunny, with little to no cloud cover.
Hawks catcher Ronnie Allen Jr. spoke about the conditions, noting that it's something the team takes into account several days ahead of each contest.
"The biggest thing that I've learnt from our staff, is it's days prior to hydrating, it's not day of," Allen Jr. said. "So if you can just keep pounding that water and making sure electrolytes are in there, you can never be overcautious."
Along with the players, fans must also take the heat into account. Hawks season-ticket holder since 1998, Larry Pietz, spoke on what he does to stay cool.
"Sunscreen, water and neck drapes, (a) little squirt bottle with the fan on it, you've got it all," Pietz said. "There are ways, but you have to stay hydrated."
Hawks staff also take the condition's of fans in attendance into account. Marketing Manager Paige Plotzke spoke on how they try to help.
"We try to take precaution and help our fans with that stuff too," Plotzke said. "We pass out actual fans at the gates for people coming into the stadium, to fan themselves off throughout the game. Some use it to block the sun, just stuff like that. You can bring stuff into the stadium like empty spray bottles, fill it up here, and so stuff like that obviously helps."
The Hawks (28-21) are currently down 0-1 in their six-game series against the Great Falls Voyagers. Wednesday's game features several events from a cornhole tournament to Bark in the Park, a night where dogs are allowed in attendance (water bowls are set up throughout the stadium to help).
